CBO’s 15 Wing Moose Jaw Firefighter Samantha Kaluzny volunteered her time as a leader and role model at Camp Molly in White City, Saskatchewan. This was such a great opportunity to empower and educate a group of dynamic young women aged 15 to18 who are interested in pursuing a career in fire services. “It is with excitement that I am pleased to provide a report on my experience at Camp Molly, which is camp provided to young females interested in the Fire Service, which took place from June 6- 9 2024 in White City Saskatchewan. Canadian Base Operators sponsorship made it possible for these young women to gain insights and hands- on experience in the Fire Service, it was an absolute pleasure being a mentor at Camp Molly and will forever be grateful for the opportunity provided to me.
Over the four days the girls learnt the basics of hose handling, medical, ladders, vehicle extraction, search and rescue, and how to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. All skills were demonstrated while working as a TEAM. The campers at Camp Molly made Saskatchewan history with being the first Camp Molly held outside of Ontario. I witnessed 14 young women do and try tasks most strong, trained grown adults are afraid of. Each girl stepped up to challenge themselves and tried something out of their comfort zones. I was lucky enough to have a seat in the front row watching their growth, it was truly inspirational. Proud is an understatement.
I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to participate at Camp Molly. The experience has reinforced my belief in the importance of supporting programs that encourage diversity and provide young women with empowerment and confidence to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
