Contracted Flying Training and Support (CFTS)—Southport Aerospace Centre

Project Description

Southport Aerospace Centre Inc. was established as a not-for-profit, non-share corporation in 1992 to manage the assets of the former Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie, which was originally established in 1940 as a training base for military pilots. After the transition from CFB Portage to Southport occurred, military pilot training continued through the 3 Canadian Forces Flight Training School which was being operated by Bombardier and succeeded by Allied Wings (now KF Aerospace) in 2005 until present.

KF Aerospace Defence Programs provides instructors and instructional material, aircraft (including the responsibility for their servicing, maintenance and air worthiness) and all aircraft fuel, oil and lubricants. It also requires the provision of airfield services (including air traffic control, weather, aircraft rescue & firefighting, flight planning and snow and ice control services), as well as facilities services to support ground and flight training (including accommodation, food services, physical training, and some administrative and personnel support).

Role of CBO

CBO is part of a consortium led by KF Aerospace Defence Programs that provides ground training, flight training, and support services for Canadian Armed Forces pilots. CBO is responsible for overseeing the provision of airfield and facility support services for the training program. We also provide guidance to the consortium regarding long‑term capital investments versus routine maintenance programs.
